March 25, 1998:
Problem Set 7 is now
available.
March 13, 1998:
Problem Set 6 is now
available.
March 6, 1998:
Problem Set 5 is now
available.
March 3, 1998:
March 2, 1998:
Exam 1 will be held on Wednesday, March 4, during normal class
hours in the Science Center Library. For more details on the topics
covered by the exam, and some review problems, please see the
Exam 1 Review
Problems.
Lyn will be holding a review session on Monday, March 2, from
7-9pm in room SCI E111 (down the hall from E101) in which the Exam 1
Review Problems will be discussed. Refreshments will be served.
February 22, 1998:
Problem Set 4 is now
available. Because it was posted late, the due date will be 5pm,
Saturday, Februrary 28. After that point, you may turn it in late for
75% credit until 11:59pm Sunday, March 1.
This problem set is more challenging than the past two problem
sets, so start it early and be sure to allocate more time than usual
to finish it. Have fun playing with PictureWorld!
February 12, 1998:
There is now a Text only
version of Problem Set 2 which does not have the printing
problems that the original version has. If you want a printout of the
assignment and are using the Laser Printers on campus, you should
print this text only version. There is also a
separate version with the
images alone that you can use to print out the images.
February 11, 1998:
- The student class
list page is now available. From it, you can easily browse the
home pages of all students taking CS111 this semester. Here is a
checklist that every CS111 student should follow:
- Make sure that the link to your home page from the class
list works. If it doesn't, it's probably because you didn't
name your home page "index.html". If you named your home page
something other than "index.html", please upload another
version with the name "index.html".
- A lot of pages have missing images. Make sure that you
upload all images from your local copy (the one on floppy disk)
to your public_html folder.
- There are an appalling number of spelling errors on the web
pages I (Lyn) surfed through -- please proofread your pages for
typos!
- CS111 drop-in tutors are available every night from Sunday
through Thursday in room SCI E101. Click
here for the names and schedules of the
tutors.
- For the past several days, Wellesley's connection to the
Internet has been painfully slow, making the completion of the
Prelab from Problem Set 2 quite difficult. However, it appears
that this problem is now fixed, so that you should be able to
complete the Prelab if you have not done so already.
February 4, 1998:
- When editing your HTML files in Symantec Cafe, use a
"fixed-width" font to make the indentation easier to see. Examples
of fixed-width fonts are Courier and Monaco. You can change the
font in Symantec Cafe by (1) selecting the Edit pull-down
menu (2) selecting the Preferences item from the Edit
pull-down menu; this opens up a Project Manager Preferences window
(3) selecting Editing within the Project Manager
Preferences window and (4) selecting the desired Font.
Your hardcopy file submissions for Problem Set 1 should use
Courier or Monaco font.
- Keep in mind that CS111 does not satisfy the college
laboratory requirement, despite the occurrence of the word
"laboratory" in the course name.
February 1, 1998:
Due to the fact that the accounts for CS111 are not yet set up,
you do not have to complete task 1 of the prelab before coming to
lab. We will go over it in lab. You should still do task 2. You
should be getting an email message with course information and
another with account information later today.
January 28, 1998:
- Please fill out the course
questionnaire by noon on
Thursday, January 28. We need the information from your
questionnaires to determine who is in the class, to schedule labs,
and to create CS111 file server accounts.
- Please read the documentation on the
CS111 server. Also browse the
documentation page to familiarize
yourself with other documentation for the course. In particular,
you should familiarize yourself with the documentation for
Netscape,
Fetch,
email,
and bulletin, and backing up your
floppy disk.
